A Long Weekend in the Davis Mountains

We had a long 4 day weekend for Memorial Day, and we decided to take off to the Davis Mountains. We stayed at the State Park and had a great time!

Before we could leave, we had Serena's Spring program on Thursday night. She has lost all shyness and hammed it up on stage!
A view of our campsite. We saw javelinas and deer from our trailer.

A Total family picture while we were out walking the dogs.

Visiting historic Fort Davis.

Serena in her touring regalia- she is a bit fancier than dad or Keeg.

On Sunday we drove down to Presidio and went on the River Road through Big Bend State Park. It was a very interesting drive, and we saw lots of harsh yet beautiful in it's own way country.
This was our picnic spot.

Kids fixing to throw rocks in the Rio Grande. Keegan pronounced this the "best vacation" ever. Guess we can forget New York City!

On Saturday afternoon we were driving up to McDonald Observatory and ran into a storm. This is not what you want to see on your windshield. Luckily it was small hail, and it did not do any damage.
The pastures looked like it had snowed.

There was a geocache in the state park that Coley was determined to find. He took us straight up the side of the "mountain" to find it eventhough we had passed a path that went this way the night before. We forged ahead and ended up at the very top before we came to the correct spot!

Found!!!!
This is what Keegan found while Daddy was signing the cache. Thank goodness he has excellent eye sight because he was fixing to slide down this big rock and would have come right across the snake!
After we got away from the snake we had to document the climb with a picture.
Keegan found the trail! It was less than 10 feet from the cache, but we took the adventurous way up!
Going down the trail....can you tell how steep it was?
Serena did a great job keeping up.
We had a great time on this "practice" vacation, and we can't wait to take off across the country in a few weeks!
